I must correct my previous reports:

(1) Both nesting attempts were abandoned,
probably due to the gravel being very compact.

(2) What I had assumed being a Painted Turtle
was, as pointed out by a knowledgeable person,
a Red-eared Slider (identified by the red spot on
its head seen in a few photos).
