This may not be exciting in some parts of NS, but I spend a lot of time in
the woods in Kings County. The last time I saw Spruce Grouse in this county
was 1982. (In 1998 I saw them on Taylor Head, Halifax Co.). Today, Bernard
Forsythe invited me to go into Methals Lake bog with him. (This is an almost
2 hour hike from the S end of Corkum & Burns Road and is, in fact, almost
impassable due to many Dec 13/10 blowdowns. I can't recommend it to anyone.)
But we got there & precisely where the trail enters the bog, on a rough sort
of bridge, we saw a Spruce Grouse with her chicks !! I was so excited I felt
like I had "buck fever". I have a rather nice photo of the female and a
so-so photo of her & 3 chicks. The chicks are to her left, on the boards, in
that photo.

I should note that Bernard has seen Spruce Grouse in the same area before,
including last year.
