On behalf of project partners Bird Studies Canada, Environment Canada, Natu= re NB, Blomidon Naturalists Society, Pictou County Naturalists Club, Nova S= cotia Bird Society, Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, and the Ecology Act= ion Centre, I am pleased to announce the launch of a new program, Maritimes= Swiftwatch. This program brings together the monitoring efforts of individ= uals and groups who have, for many years, followed the annual migration and= breeding cycles of Chimney Swifts, a species listed as Threatened under th= e Species at Risk Act in Canada in 2009. Chimney Swifts historically roosted and nested in large, hollow trees in ma= ture forests across the Maritimes. As human settlers moved in and modified = the landscape, these hollow trees became increasingly scarce and swifts ada= pted to using the chimneys of schools, churches, houses, industrial buildin= gs and other man-made structures as nest and roost sites. However, steady a= dvancements in heating technologies have changed the way we use our chimney= s and today the large, open chimneys of older buildings are being capped, s= teel-lined or even torn down at a rapid pace. This loss of habitat is suspe= cted to be a leading cause of the decline in Chimney Swift populations acro= ss the species' North American range, including a 95% reduction of the Cana= dian population in the last 40 years. The overarching goal of Maritimes Swiftwatch is to identify, maintain, prot= ect and ultimately increase the amount of suitable habitat for nesting and = roosting Chimney Swifts. In 2011, Maritimes Swiftwatch volunteers across Ne= w Brunswick and Nova Scotia will take part in Swiftwatches at fifteen (15) = sites on the following six (6) evenings: May 29, June 2, June 6, July 24, J= uly 28, and August 1. These dates were chosen to coincide with peak migrat= ion. Conducting Swiftwatches at the same dates throughout the Maritimes wil= l ensure that we are not double-counting Chimney Swifts as they move across= the region. Anyone can participate in Maritimes Swiftwatch. All that's required is the = ability to identify and count Chimney Swifts and a willingness to spend a f= ew evenings watching swifts return to their roost as the sun sets. To find = out more about Swiftwatches happening in your area, contact Ally Manthorne,= Maritimes Swiftwatch Coordinator (amanthorne@birdscanada.org<mailto:amanth= orne@birdscanada.org> ; 506- 364-5196).
