He's pretty good at returning when called, but nowadays with coyotes, snares, porcupines and other dog hazards lurking everywhere, we tend to keep him on the leash if we're in the woods. That would apply to the Cape Split trail. If we're out on the dykes or in open country where we can see him, we let him off leash. If I'm on a BNS or NSBS field trip, I realize that there are people who don't like dogs, and also that he might detract from observing nature, by barking or pooping etc., so I don't take him.
