Ken McKenna
Box 218 Stellarton NS
B0K 1S0
902 752-7644

Location: Big Island
Observation date: 05/12/10

Notes: A spring peeper was heard calling on Docker Rd. and also on trail to Baudoux Bch. Lots of kelp flies and other insects
today. Temp. reached 10C. Logs that had been on beach from the tipped barge have mostly been removed.
Ruts in beach sand from this operation, but I suspect winter will smooth the sand again. This was a successful Piping Plover
nesting beach in 2010. Tide was mostly high.
Summary of Birds seen in Big Island area:
Highlights: A Goshawk flew from Baudoux Beach Trail. There were 100 Bohemian Waxwings feeding on Canada Holly on the Baudoux Bch.
loop. A little uncommon from Big I. were 1 Black-headed Gull and 1 Black Guillemot. There were still large numbers of
Red-breasted Mergansers and Canada Geese more than 1000 of each. On leaving the west end of the island, in the afternoon, the
RB Mergansers had moved off Melmerby Beach and Kings Head across the Merigomish Hbr. and there were more Bonaparte's Gulls
in that area that were not included in the total. Myrtle Warblers were near a pleantiful supply of Bayberry.
