Friday Oct 28th 3000-3500 Gannets were noted through the day largest #'s within the = first 3 Hrs after daylight. A steady stream in the "near Shore" area = less than 3 miles although not the largest #'s I've seen but good just = the same. 3-4000 C Eiders with one group ~1500 still on the water roosting on/near = the "North Rock" Breaker/shoal. there were bunches, rafts, and armies = going by most of the morning Scooters were in good # also ~500 mostly all Black with a few WW thrown = in the mix N. Fulmar 500+ mostly in the 4-6 miles off area steady stream of loosely = associated birds Dovekie's in #'s I've never seen or herd of before No less than 550-600. = I've never seen flocks of more than 5-6 on the wing and groups of 8 on = the water Boy has that changed when the first "flock" of 23 flew about = 100' of the boat followed shortly by many similar sized flocks there = were a quite a few 50+ bird flocks and at one time a flock of 65-70 = birds was followed by a flock of 20-25 birds with only perhaps 100' = between them this would be the largest group of birds I had in my = binoculars at once 85-95 birds 4-6 miles off Razor Bills and murres were on the move also but in lesser #'s 75-100 = for the day with 80% being Razorbills. two Jaegers were seen at a distance in the near shore area near the = feeding gulls and ducks one gave chase to a poor Bon. Gull grabbing it's = tail and wings a few times before giving up I also noted 2 Skua's I = believe were Great, traveling together in the same area at Eastern Rock = Breaker Most of the day on friday was spent in the 5-6 mile off area (level = bottom) It was surprising to see such a flow of migrants come from the = NE and disappear over the horizon to the SW. The shear # of Dovekie's = was for me the highlight for friday. Saturday Oct 29th=20 Most of the Day was spent along the north east side of the harbour with = in 1/2 mile of shore. The big notable for me was the RT Loons heading = south I seen 50+ birds in the morning witch for me would probably be = more than twice as many I've ever seen in the canso area all summed. = lots of Ducks on the move (15-1800) mostly Eiders (old ducks and drakes) = and Black Scooters (harbour coots and butter bills). I did see a couple = of flocks of Harlequins (5,9) I heard another boat talking about a flock = of 25-30 flying by them just inside of us.
