--Apple-Mail-35--703292375 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Regarding the gray jay and ignoring the chickadee question, I'll opine that gray jays are one of a number of species of the boreal forest that seem relatively oblivious to us when we discover them. Best example is probably the spruce grouse, but think also of our two kinds of 3-toed woodpeckers, whatever their current names are, etc. The northern spruce forest is so vast (but of course much less so in modern decades -- thus necessary campaigns for protection of large swathes from alterations/developments/clear-cutting) -- and relatively uninhabited by humans, that it's no wonder that non-human (I almost typed "natural") elements feel secure and unthreatened most of the time. My 2 cents in Ulli's words. Cheers from Jim, still in B.C. but soon to be back in Wolfville.
