At noon today, an hour after high tide, in Wolfville Harbour there were 8 roosting greater yellowlegs. Immediately thereafter, I drove out to the Grand Pre dykelands to look for shorebirds and gulls. It took me quite a while to find 100+ black-bellied plovers, too far from me to tell if other species were with them, in an open unplanted bare field just north of the Fuller farm at the southern boundary of the dykelands, and well east of the main paved road. There were oodles of herring gulls scattered in small to large flocks, mostly idle, but one flock of about 300 was fun to watch as they followed a plow and showed very brief feeding frenzies on who- knows-what that the farmer's plow uncovered. I didn't notice any great black-backed gulls or ring-billed gulls, but one group of herring gulls contained two adult lesser black- backed gulls (Richard Stern saw eight different adults very recently in the same areas). Nothing noted at the Wolfville sewage ponds (too late for roosting shorebirds) except dozens of green-winged teals (with black ducks) along the shore. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville Jim (James W.)
