  Hi all,

Despite the rain, I spent some time birding in Belleisle Marsh early
this afternoon. I wasn't able to identify all the ducks, due to the poor
visibility, but the birding was rewarding nonetheless.

The best find was a first-year SANDHILL CRANE just north of the
southwestern-most impoundment. My wife says there was a second bird like
it that flew away in the opposite direction, but I didn't get a chance
to see it.

I also got great looks of an AMERICAN BITTERN and a HOODED MERGANSER.
There were lots of WOOD DUCKS, AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, and TEALS (of both
species).

There was a large flock of SWALLOWS that included individuals of all
four species that one might expect to see in this area, as well as a few
CHIMNEY SWIFTS mixed in.

Among songbirds, the most notable thing was the large numbers of YELLOW
WARBLERS and COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, including many first-year birds.

Best wishes,
Sydney Penner
