--=====================_348066421==.ALT Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed 02 August On Saturday 31 July, Nic Field and I explored the Eastern Shore from Martinique Beach to Hartlen Point. This was more of an orientation trip than a targetted outing, and the tide (a Spring tide) was adverse for us almost everywhere we went (very high, so most shorebird areas were under water), but we knew this would be the case. Some highlights: - just before 0800, on Hwy 107, we observed a large concentration of shorebirds at the innermost end of Chezzetcook Inlet, at the Head of Chezzetcook. The spring tide had inundated all the mudflats and salt marsh in the inlet, and the last bit at the Head was disappearing quickly, but we quickly counted 2000+ Short-billed Dowitchers, an equal number of Semipalmated Sandpipers, 500+ Lesser Yellowlegs, and a half dozen White-rumped Sandpipers. - a second-summer Bonaparte's Gull was resting on a rock in the middle of a small pond between Hwy & and Hwy 107. This is very close to the Head of Chezzetcook, but was still an unexpected location to find this species. - a family of six Boreal Chickadees was very coooperative along the Mines Road. - when we looked from Lawrencetown Head down into the bay at the mouth of the Lawrencetown River (draining Lawrencetown Lake) Nic spotted a female Black Scoter with a small flock of Common Eider.
