Great photo, Ian -- what it  clearly shows to me is an immature  
(yearling?) male hairy w. with a female -- neither bird is a  
fledgling -- both sexes of fledglings of both species show single  
orange or red spots on the front of the top of head and part of the  
cap, but immature males of both hairy and downy woodpeckers show the  
twinned red spots shown so well by Ian's photo.  That's my two cents,
