Happens at my house every sum= mer. Both parents feed the young. They first gather suet at the feeder and = bring it back to the nest. Then they bring the fledges (one or two at a tim= e) to a tree branch or deck rail near the feeder and feed them there. Then = the fledges fly to the feeder and are fed there. Finally the fledges start = feeding themselves. After a week or so the fledges move on or are forced ou= t. At the moment we have two Hairy Woodpecker pairs=2C a Downy Woodpecker pai= r=2C a Grackle pair=2C a Starling pair=2C and two or three Blue Jay pairs f= ighting it out for limited suet cakes. Only the Hairys have fledges being f= ed at the feeder at the moment. Lots of noise though. All the best. Later=2C the male started eating out = of a mostly empty feeder while the female hopped around inside our crabappl= e tree. We noticed that she would visit the male and they would exchange fo= od. It looked like she was feeding him [insects from the tree?] I managed t= o capture one of these exchanges. =20 http://www.amimckay.com/graphics/hairywoodpeckers-lunch1.jpg =20 Could she be his mother? Is this common in mated pairs?
