I think I know the identity of these retreats in the cattail leaves,
although I have seen them mostly in/on leaves of grasses in marshes:
it's a retreat for a female brown spider known as the two-clawed
hunting spider in the family Clubionidae -- another of my books calls
Clubiona sp. a sac spider. The female lays her eggs in a silken sac
inside the leafy retreat and then stays with them, either until they
hatch or she dies, both of which outcomes possibly happening
together, I think. Cheers from Jim -- I believe I have a 35-mm.
photo/slide of the retreat, both closed and open to show the female
with egg-sac. And yes, they do occur in the western provinces, at
least Sask. and Alberta.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
