JUNE 29, 2010 - I checked on two more bald eagle nests, perhaps too
late for one of them:

(1) bald eagle nest that was new in 2009, south and across the big
strawberry U-pick field from Stirling's Farm Market in Greenwich (one
of the controversial five properties in the disputed proposed
developmental growth corridor (hot zoning issue) from Wolfville to
the connector road between Highways 1 and 101). A telescope is
needed for viewing, and today I couldn't see any adults or juveniles
at or near the nest in the pine. But perhaps any fledglings have no
left the nest? Perhaps Harold Forsyth has checked that nest more
often than I. I only remember that it was definitely occupied by
eagles back in the Spring.

(2) bald eagle nest north and bit west from Waterville, and just
south of Mitch Visser's farm (now a mink farm?)(formerly pigs). To
get to this nest, drive north from Waterville on the road to Black
Rock and Grafton -- just past the river, go past Blair Road and turn
left on Parker Condon, which leads west to the Visser house -- park
across from Mitch's home and look directly south to see the nest in a
pine -- the old nest is about 100 metres west of this new nest -- the
new nest still holds at least one large dark nestling/fledgling, and
I couldn't tell if it had a nest-mate behind it, but an adult eagle
was perched just above the nest.

In the large red oak on the corner of Black Road Road and Blair Road,
the "witch's broom" of branches now has a lot of red oak leaves; thus
the "broom" is a gall or abnormal growth of the oak caused by some
unknown stimulus at one point in a main branch of that tree, but
apparently not a parasitic plant growth.

In the same spot there are lots of conspicuously white-flowering
water hemlock plants (nasty poisonous plants to be very careful about).

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
