I will look up the title etc. for Lauren Brown's book on common
grasses and grass-like plants soon and report back -- it's an
excellent guide and still available in print, I believe.

JUNE 26, 2010 - As I listened to Quirks and Quarks on CBC Radio One,
I walked west from the Wolfville Farm Market and followed the Rail
Trail: flowering plants now include many summer species like tall
white fleabanes, butter-and-eggs, St. John's-wort, white campion,
garden valerian or heliotrope, goldenrod with linear leaves very
close to blooming, plus dyke cord grass (Spartina pectinata), brome
grass, common rush (Juncus communis), and a common identifiable sedge
(Carex)(I recommend Lauren Brown's book with line drawings and easy-
to-use keys for grass-like plants), etc.

Then I checked on three local bald eagle nests, since right now is
the start of the time period when nestling eaglets become fledglings
and risk their first flights:

(1) the nest at the Evangeline Beach Family Campground (name?) now
holds a single quite large fledgling, but no sign of the second
nestling;

(2) Starr's Point, Chris Cox's farm, nest along bank of mouth of
Canard River -- I couldn't see any adult or young eagles, but leaves
obscure part of the nest;

(3) Canard Road (Hwy. 341), just west of Muskrat Farm Marsh -- one
adult was perched on a branch just east of the nest (in same tree),
but I couldn't see any youngsters in or near the nest.

{And, of course, the nest in the Eagle Landing subdivision north of
Kentville presumably still holds two large nestlings -- I will check
that again soon.)

(Also, of course, this is an off-year for the Greenwich nest just
north of Noggins Farm, since this pair never laid any eggs this year,
presumably because of a youngish adult female that needs another year
for full maturity?)

I also checked on the small artificial pond along Collins Road, north
of the old Allen's Juice plant at Port Williams, where earlier this
year Brenda & Bill Thexton reported 2 adult Canada geese (possibly
tame?) with a single gosling (C. geese have bred there also in past
years); but there were no geese at all, just 2 muskrats, a single
mallard, and numerous grackles.

JUNE 27, 2010 - As mentioned above, I again checked the bald eagle
nest in Eagle Landing subdivision north of Kentville, and the two
fairly large dark nestilings were still on and in the nest.

An interesting bonus was seen on a power line across the street from
the house under construction -- a very mockingbird-like bird that
disappeared before it could be confirmed. On June 24 Richard Stern
saw a n. mockingbird carrying food in this same subdivision.

Back in our back yard in Wolfville, at least one of the catbirds with
the disturbance calls is still around.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
