The most usual time that I've heard frogs scream was when they were captured by a snake.  The cries were audible from quite some distance.

For Maria & Chris & John, et al. -- Further on this, I have heard recorded bull frog screams (and really piercing higher screams of leopard frogs) on commercial records, tapes, or CDs, so they must be available somewhere on the Internet, too.
