Hi Lois;

Try typing Cornell Lab in your search bar.  When you get to their homepage, you'll see on the lefthand side "All About Birds" - Search online bird guide. Type in Virginia Rail and then click on "Sound". Do the same with every bird that was suggested to you and see if you can find your sound.

Good luck. We're all dying to know!

Cheers;
Suzanne

I heard the sounds again this morning, in the same general vicinity.  I happened to be walking past the spot when it made its sounds (a thick, narrow strip of trees and bushes separates the path from the high reeds at the edge of the marsh at this point, so impossible to get a sighting).

Phonetically, this is what it sounded like: "grrk-grrk-grrk-grrk-grrk-grrk-grrk-grrk", all at the same pitch, very low-pitched, fairly loud, and more throaty rather than a clear sound.

Does this help with its identification??
