Conspicuously in bloom throughout Canning are lots of Umbelliferous plants with flat white inflorescences, and soon I realized that good old goutweed was at its peak. In Harris' Pond in Canning, I heard but couldn't see a calling pied- billed grebe and saw a male wood duck, while I was examining 25+ basking painted turtles -- but I couldn't see any turtles that were larger or otherwise different from the painted turtles. However, we should all continue to look for the large possibly Blanding's turtle that was seen there back in April by James Hirtle and David Alward. Also blue flags (irises) were in bloom in the marsh there. Also I heard Am. redstarts singing, and I saw a yellow warbler carrying food already.
