JUNE 4, 2010 - Again I checked the raven nest in the pine woodlot
just north of the Acadia Univ. Arena, and there were FIVE full-grown
ravens on or adjacent to the nest, but no calling was heard during my
short visit. I couldn't tell how many of the five were fledglings,
but I will guess all of them, since probably both parents were out
foraging at the time (imagine how much food that 5 full-grown growing
ravens require per day!).

Not far away I heard what sounded like begging calls of American
crows (fledglings?), coming from the cemetery along Main St. at the
north edge of downtown Wolfville. When I investigated, near the
former Atlantic Festival Theatre I was loudly mobbed by at least 6
adult crows. I'm guessing that there must be a nest and/or
fledglings there to cause such a commotion (like the movie, "The
Birds"). Rather than investigate further, I elected to leave the
area and let the crows and my ears relax.

JUNE 7, 2010 - Once again I checked on the raven nest just north of
the Acadia Univ. Arena in Wolfville. Before I got there I heard
frequent begging calls of fledglings, and, sure enough, I clearly
counted 5 fledglings -- 3 were together in a tree-top about 15 metres
away from the nest-tree, and the other 2 were in separate trees a bit
further from the nest -- they all looked fully grown and feathered
out, but the 2 separate youngsters were clearly not completely
fledged yet and awkward in their trees. I saw both adults, and one
of them clearly issued me a warning by flying below the tree-tops and
just above me while calling very aggressively, "telling me" to leave
the area!

On an earlier visit I expressed surprise that the youngsters had not
yet fledged, in this year of relatively very early happenings. This
pair of adults got a relatively late start this year, in my opinion,
perhaps indicating that one or both of them were new breeders (2
years old).

For anyone interested in info' on ravens, try Googling "Bernd
Heinrich", who is a scientist and natural historian and prolific
author at University of Vermont who spends most of his winters in the
woods of Maine. He has two books on ravens, "Ravens in Winter" and
more recently "Mind of the Raven".

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
