Andy, was it spring peepers you were hearing?  i.e., loud, high  
single "peeps" from our lone species of treefrog?  Another frog that  
calls at this time of year is the green frog, which sounds like a  
plucked banjo string ("glunk").  Try Googling the herpatlas  
(Herpetological Atlas of Nova Scotia) or just novascotiafrogs  
perhaps, where you should be able on line to listen to all of the  
province's frog and toad species, of which we have about 12 species
