Hi All=20

Well I'm going to wade into this a bit.=20

My first impression of this animal was "it's a mink".=20

Even though many many experts have suggested it's an Otter and it could =
very well be. Most everyone does the same thing in identifying things =
"go for the head (face)". All too often there are obstacles that prevent =
solid ID's. Such as physical barriers, deformities, exaggerated =
characteristics, and preconceived thoughts. All some times can cloud our =
judgement or cause us to miss some other clues.=20

In this case the most viewed image or the one that receives the most `` =
air time`` is the left side profile of the animals head. Again as with =
the annual ``headless seals`` an area of the body that is very venerable =
to damages (post mortems) and often the first place to show signs of =
decomposition.=20

Now there's another diagnostic part of this animal is very visible and =
in my mind is clearly not conforming to the ``Otter Theory``. It is the =
hairless fight front foot. This feature to me has Mink written all over =
it. The foot appears to have no damage structurally and in the same =
photo evidence of trauma around the head is clear.=20

My Call is it's a Mink.=20

That was my first impression as well. The one view seems to show odd =
teeth for an otter (or anything), though perhaps they aren't teeth or =
they are loose and therefore misaligned?

It's pretty clearly a juvenile river otter (Lontra canadensis). It =
must have been lying dead for some time with its face in the water so =
that the fur on the front of the head became loosened and fell away.=20

    Cheers,

    Chris

Two nurses not from the area were hiking and their dogs drug this =
out of the lake. It was a waterlogged, partially bald 'creature'. They =
took a few photos and continued on their way. Once they had time to =
think about it and realized they had no idea what it was and went back =
to get it, it was gone. All that is left is the photos that they have =
released.
