Angus & Blake, Re: Spring Azures. More than a week ago, on the afternoon of Saturday May 8, I saw about two dozen of them flitting among Rhodora (not yet flowering then, but they have since) on a rough footpath through bushy, rocky terrain off the Rails to Trails path in Timberlea, Halifax County. I did wonder at the time if that was their first day up and around.... This evening I had a walk in Hemlock Ravine, where I heard a Hermit Thrush singing in woods that were otherwise fairly quiet, except for a Mourning Dove, a B-t Gr Warbler, and what I think was some kind of wren (need to study up on wren voices).

This afternoon, on the Wagner's Beach trail (on the Prospect Peninsula, HRM), there were many Spring Azures, roughly forty, and most were actively chasing and nectering around Rhodora, which was blooming in profusion. Other leps included two elfins which got away, and two fresh American Ladies. Near the shoreline there were many honeysuckles in bloom, and along the trail patches of Bunchberry were out. Though it has been cooler of late plants and trees are still ahead of schedulr -- our Red Maples are leafing out three weeks early.

  Cheers,

  Blake
