Hi Bev.

The Wilcox Playa had a large number of Wilson's Phalaropes as well as American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Ruddy Ducks, and Eared Grebes. We even had one Semipalmated Plover and a Killdeer there.

Don - I spend winters at Bisbee, Arizona and occasionally see shorebirds on the mudflats at Whitewater Draw and the Willcox Playa area in the southeast corner of Arizona - not far from the New Mexico border. Although the area is known more for the huge numbers of overwintering Sandhill Cranes, I expect these and some of the other playas are probably important stopping places for many birds during their migrations.

Carol and I had our first willet of the year on a stretch of highway near the New Mexico, Arizona border. It flew up from the road and showed its telltale wing markings. This was in the desert with no water in the vicinity. Not a bird we would have expected.
