APR. 13, 2010 - One cabbage white butterfly seen in Wolfville today.

APR. 14, 2010 - Still no adult bald eagle visible in the nest just
north of Noggins Farm Market at Greenwich. Has anyone tried to view
it via the Webcam set up high in the adjacent pine tree? (very
visible from Highway 1).

At the Kennie farm just south of the Hortonville exit of Highway 101,
I wasn't surprised that I couldn't find the all-white red-tailed
hawk, which has probably now migrated back toward wherever it is used
to spending the summer (location unknown). Several years ago
Birdwatcher's Digest magazine had a cover article on albinistic/
leucistic red-tailed hawks, but I lost that file with the info' on
the article and author, who was collecting observations/sightings of
such red-tailed hawks, including true albinos. If anyone can look
that up, I would be interested in contacting that author and
describing our bird with the dark splotch on the top back of the
head, just in case he might know any sightings that might match our
Hortonville hawk.

At that farm at Hortonville there was a normally-coloured red-tailed
hawk today.

At Wallbrook, south of Grand Pre, in the Gaspereau River were at
least 5 double-crested cormorants foraging no doubt for rainbow
smelt, which are running now and have been since April 1st, according
to Kevin Reid of Reid's Meat Market at Melanson. Kevin says the run
this year started about a week earlier than last year.

At the meat market I saw a swallow fly past, probably a tree swallow?

Back at Wallbrook, on the property of Kay & Ralph Stirling, I walked
up to where bald eagles have nested in an old pine tree in past years
(last successful nest was about 3 years ago?). But now that tree has
fallen down. That pair of eagles might very well be nesting
somewhere along that forested ravine, but nobody knows where.

On the Stirlings' land, I saw a sharp-shinned hawk that was clearly
hunting by flying slowly at treetop level, and a soaring red-tailed
hawk.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
