--Boundary_(ID_yajfwLexoGhqY3m4H2DLPg) Content-type: text/plain; CHARSET=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT APR. 14, 2010 - On CBC Radio's Maritime Noon today, there was a news item about the opening of the gates of the Petitcodiac River's Causeway at Riverview, N.B., just outside Moncton, scheduled for this afternoon finally. Today's Marnoon call-in was on Birds of the Maritimes, with the usual three guest expert's: Ian McLaren of N.S., Jim Wilson of N.B., & Duane Oakley of P.E.I. Either Duane or Jim mentioned hearing what sounded like a spring peeper early this Spring, and tracing the sound to an excellently mimicking blue jay! One call was about a very tame ruffed grouse in a fellow's yard (where?) -- this bird follows him around (for about a week now) and is attracted to or chases cars -- Ian mentioned having heard of ruffed grouse approaching or attacking ATVs and chainsaws! (perhaps turned on by noise?). Someone called to ask for the identification of the "cheeseburger bird"?, which was easily answered as a singing black-capped chickadee! Another caller had a suggestion for controlling raccoons at feeders: smear some peanut butter on blown-up balloons and ....!! CBC listeners need to contact the station/corporation about what a shame it is that this incredibly popular and informative show has been cut back from 2 hours to 1, leaving only about a half-hour now for the call-in on most days. Contacting your MP might also be useful. ALERT re tomorrow's Maritime Noon: BOB BANCROFT will be on again about wildlife issues -- and no doubt coyotes will be one of subjects discussed. I hope everyone saw yesterday's article in the Chronicle Herald about the history and ineffectiveness of bounties. ALERT re Maritime Noon on May 12: BRIDGET STUTCHBURY will be on the call-in about birds. She is the author of "Silence of the Songbirds", and her brand-new book is "The Bird Detective", I believe, and unfortunately the latter is only in hard cover at this time and thus rather expensive. Also on May 12 Bridget will be giving a public presentation at 7 p.m. at Dalhousie University's Rowe Building, 6100 University Ave., Potter Auditorium.
