I was at my cottage in Port Hilford, Guys Co, for the long weekend. As soon
as I filled the feeders the Purple Finches where at it, there were about a
dozen with around equal numbers of males and females.. They sang up a storm
all weekend. Also at the feeders were Goldfinches, Chickadees, RB
Nuthatches, Juncos, a pair of Downy Woodpeckers and a single Song Sparrow. I
heard a Saw Whet Owl calling between 8:30 and 9PM on Friday night. The Loons
are back on the lake already. I heard them calling but didn't manage to get
a look at them. I saw a few Loons still in winter plumage in the bays,
catching crabs. Also scattered groups of Canada Geese in several places.

Interestingly, the ice is off the lake ( Indian Harbour Lake ) 5 weeks early
this year. I can't remember the ice ever being off the lake before April 20
in the past 30 years. On top of that, the lake never froze till well into
January, when it is normally frozen over by the 2nd week in December. So,
the lake was frozen for at least two months shorter than usual.

I even had a single Black Fly land on my arm !

I heard no toads or frogs calling yet.
