I used to do that route=2E The first I went I took a girlfriend with me=2E=
 It was a little unnerving to be that far back=2C just two girls =2C tha=
t late at night=2E I got used to it over the 4-5 years that I did it=2E=3C=

Hi=2C=3Cbr /=3E=3Cbr /=3ELast night Liz and I ran our Owl Survey route=2C=
 along the Mines Road - starting west of Falmouth and heading up the log=
ging roads along the headwaters of the Avon River=2E The bad news - no o=
wls!=A0 There is evidence of continued=2C fresh and extensive logging=2C=
 so perhaps that=27s why=2E Also=2C where we heard a Barred owl last yea=
r=2C the river was in full spate=2C and very noisy=2E I heard 2 single =26=
quot=3Bpeeps=26quot=3B that sounded Saw-whettish=2C but they didn=27t co=
ntinue=2C so I didn=27t count them=2E=3Cbr /=3E

=3Cbr /=3EThe good news - it was the warmest owl survey I have ever done=
=2E +13C at sunset=2C and still +7C by 22=3A30=A0 -and there were lots o=
f other things to see=2E The stars were brilliant=2C and even as extreme=
ly amateur observers=2C and with the help of an Iphone app=2E called Poc=
ket Universe we were able to identify the Orion nebula=2C the Pleiades a=
nd all the main constellations=2C as well as (courtesy of Sherman)=2C Me=
rcury=2C Venus=2C Mars and Saturn=2E Spring Peepers and Wood Frogs were =
in places very noisy=2E By using the flashlight=2C we were able to get r=
eally close looks at myriads of Wood frogs scurrying about on the water =
and at the edge=2E There were also large numbers of insects in flight=2C=
 that looked like mini-versions of June Bugs=2E=3Cbr /=3E

=3Cbr /=3EThe worse news - at the end we decided to continue along the l=
ogging road system (Butler Rd=2E etc=2E) to get back to the main road to=
 Kentville=2E After about 10km=2E of slow driving on heavily rutted road=
s=2C we discovered the road was completely washed out=2C with a large ho=
le and a river rushing through it=2E So we had to turn round and retrace=
 our steps completely=2E The best news - we eventually got home safely w=
ithout getting stuck or falling into any holes=2E=3Cbr /=3E
