Hi Everyone:

Nick and I went up the Eastern Shore today, from Halifax to Taylor's Head.

We found the following:

Red-Winged Blackbirds at the Salt Marsh Trail, next to Conrad Road (pictures posted on http://gallery.me.com/tumayoung under the gallery titled blackbirds)
American Goldfinch
Song Sparrows
Crows
Blue Jays
Starlings
Black Backed Gulls
Common mergansers (5 male and 2 female) at Rocky Route, near Three Fathom Road and a pair (male/female) at Lawrence town beach.
Black Ducks
Mallards
American Wigeon's and Canada Geese at Indian Island
Dark-eyed Junco's and Golden Kinglets at Mines Road (pictures of the Junco are posted under the gallery titled Sparrows, Juncos and Buntings).
Rock Doves at Seaforth
Black-capped Chickadees (everywhere)
Herring Gulls (everywhere).
Heard a mourning dove.
Saw a raptor at Mines Road.. No picture, of course-but yellow talons, white underparts, small, darkish beak, black eyebrow, dark eyes, white cheeks, gray-bluish back like a pigeon, smaller then a Red Tailed hawk and the wings were peaked. I think it was a Merlin. It hid in the trees and peeked out at from behind the branch but the talons were very clear to me. After this one made an appearance, we did not see any more kinglets or juncos.

In all, a very good day but we did not see what we went out for and that was the purple finch. Tomorrow we are heading out to the Valley.
