A few years ago we had a very interesting discussion on naturens about the origin of lawns, and of their increasing use as status symbols in North American society. I recall Patricia had some interesting information which I have lost. I think it came up when the city found a by-lawn against unkempt lawns, and charged one of our HFN members, who had her yard covered in native grasses, plants and shrubs. ( The Municipal Government told her what to do on her own property, and enforced the by-law.) I fully concur with your closing remarks, David, especially the closing sentence. Thank you. Well expressed. "Clearly pesticides are detrimental to the targets; weeds or insects. But a mania for frequently mowed grass monoculture also detracts from spatial biodiversity. A shift in values will in the long run be more effective than a ban that addresses only one aspect of the overmanaged yard."
