With the lack of ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, harp seals were =
pupping on the weekend close to shore at Dalhousie, NB, in the river on =
moving ice, as reported by Irene Doyle. I would suspect any where there =
is sea ice in the Gulf there will be seals pupping, which from the sea =
ice forecast on the Environment Canada website, is concentrated along a =
few shores including a couple of places off the coast of PEI, in the =
Northumberland Strait and a small section of the Quebec coast. These =
seals are highly "programmed" to find ice on which to pup and most =
likely, there will also be a high pup mortality (even without a hunt) if =
the ice is unstable. Harp and hooded seal pups spend the first part of =
their life out of the water on ice and are not prepared to be in the =
water, living on fat reserves from a short nursing period to grow and =
develop.

Any seals or pups found along the shore should be left alone and not =
forced into the water and pets should not be allowed to approach. Seals =
and pups will defend themselves by attempting to bite if forced.
