This morning while walking to work I heard and then saw a male N.
Cardinal singing. It was at the top of the tallest tree in the
neighbourhood, in one of the backyards between Waegwoltic Avenue and
Geldert Avenue in south end Halifax. There was also a Robin in the
same tree, the first I have seen in this area since before Christmas.

Earlier in the week I heard a House Finch singing below Oxford
Street, but I could not locate it. Laurel Banks, who lives near
Conrose Field and who usually has a little flock of House Finches
year round, told me last week that she hasn't seen any since the
Christmas Bird Count, and then she had only one. I have not found
any in the other usual places in Halifax this winter.

Yesterday as I left my home after lunch I chanced to look up and saw
that a Red-tailed Hawk was circling over my central Halifax
street. I think it would have been a new yard bird, if I kept a yard list.

Meanwhile Song Sparrows are singing in many places now.

	Cheers,

	Patricia L. Chalmers
	Halifax
