Unusual winter birds this year at our place on Wyman road, just outsde Yarmouth, so far include a flicker and a catbrd, reported by others.

However, late in he afternoon of Jan. 11, we had a raptor which seemed simlarly out of place. Our dog had found the nether end of a rabbit, whih he left in the snow of the back yard, about twenty feet from the house. When I looked ot abot 4 PM., there was a hawk tearing away at the corpse. Dark head and white breast: My initial thought was a red-tail. Then, as the bird shifted, I noticed the white went further down to the belly. Then the bird presented a view with its back towards us, showing a longish, cross-banded tail. Hmm ... not a red-tail. As the bird shifted its wings, it showed a white rump.

How common are over-wintering harriers?
