On Wednesday, 6th January, a beautiful oriole appeared at the feeder right outside my window at #11 Balcome Drive. ( This is just west of and behind the Chocolate Lake Hotel). I first noticed it with a flock of Am Goldfinch, but it now comes by itself. I saw it from 8:30am to 4:30pm yesterday, and it has been here several times today. The bright orange throat threw me for a loop, so I took some quick digital pictures and sent them off to Ian, Hans and Blake for a confirmation. I thought I might have an immature male Baltimore Oriole, but study showed it to be a young female. The lower mandible is very light, top mandible is dark, the eye is black with no ring at all. The undertail is bright yellow, as is the breast, with contrasting white underbelly. It has a beautifully scalloped brown back, and nice bright wing bars. I have been enjoying it on and off all weekend, and it is here today, feeding on the bag of grapes, suet , and chopped banana, as well as taking an occasional black oil sunflower seed. It likes the Christmas tree which I propped up by the old apple tree for shelter. My computer was down from Thursday until this morning, so this is a late report, but still easy to see the bird. Cheers, Joan
