The amount of energy it takes to create one is about the same as the total that it will use, over its expected lifespan, which is usually pegged at 10 years for a modern car. So in the case of the SUV, there is an upfront cost of 4.1 hectares, just to make it. That is one more reason why smaller vehicles are more environmentally frienndly... smaller initial footprint.
