Yesterday, to my surprise and delight, I heard the mystery singer again - much briefer snatches than before, but definitely the same - and there in the bushes where the song was coming from, the only birds I could see, both with and without binoculars, were two song sparrows! So I think it's safe to say Andy and Lance were indeed correct; my thanks to both. Also I have had 10+ grackles joining the bluejays in keeping the nuthatches and chickadees from my feeders - and one lone immature cedar waxwing eating the multiflora berries around the feeders.
