Early this morning while snow was still falling lightly, we had a Ring-necked Pheasant (male) stalking around our back yard in West End Halifax. This is the first time we've had a visiting pheasant during our nine years in this house. It picked up some stray food from under the barbecue. When I went outside for a closer look, it didn't take flight, but fled briskly on foot through a shrub into a neighbour's back yard--couldn't tell whether or not it was hurt and unable to fly. For my family the pheasant was a bigger -- and more colourful -- surprise than the snow.
