Hello Gayle, all,
   beavers build dams only if their colonies are located on smallish =
streams. Beavers that live on lakes or on larger rivers do not need to =
build them. Also, they build lodges only if they cannot dig burrows due =
to the presence of bedrock or glacial rubble.
   The above is true for both the North American and the Eurasian beaver =
species. "The Beaver: Natural History of a Wetlands Engineer" by D. =
Muller-Schwarze and L. Sun ( 2003, Comstock Publishing) is a motherlode =
of information on this creature...
