Your description of the song suggests a winter wren Eleanor, and the =
fact that you can't locate it is very typical,,,,they seem to be =
ventriloquists. It seems late in the year though....maybe a wren that's =
madly in love ?

  For the past few weeks I have been both enchanted and tantalised by =
the=20
  most charming intermittent birdsong around my home. From the volume it =

  sounds like a very small bird and its thin, delicate, somewhat =
wistfully=20
  haunting little melody meanders up and down for quite long periods, =
but=20
  with (to me) no recognisable repetitions. And despite being very clear =

  where the singing is coming from, I have never been able to pinpoint =
the=20
  bird.

  Do any of you have suggestions as to what it could be? I have =
Petersons=20
  Eastern Birding by Ear, but have no idea about where to start =
listening.=20
  I live close to the sea in a mixed conifer/deciduous setting with both =

  wild and open, cultivated spaces.

  Any suggertions will be most welcome!

  Eleanor Lindsay, St Margarets Bay
