For the past few weeks I have been both enchanted and tantalised by the most charming intermittent birdsong around my home. From the volume it sounds like a very small bird and its thin, delicate, somewhat wistfully haunting little melody meanders up and down for quite long periods, but with (to me) no recognisable repetitions. And despite being very clear where the singing is coming from, I have never been able to pinpoint the bird. Do any of you have suggestions as to what it could be? I have Petersons Eastern Birding by Ear, but have no idea about where to start listening. I live close to the sea in a mixed conifer/deciduous setting with both wild and open, cultivated spaces. Any suggertions will be most welcome! Eleanor Lindsay, St Margarets Bay
