Allison and I got out for some birding for the first time in a long
while. Encouraged by Ken McKenna's report of pelagics spotted off Big
I. on Thursday, we decided to do the same "around the horn" of
Antigonish county. Made stops at Livingstone Cove, Ballantynes Cove,
Cribbons Point, and Ogdens Pond. Best bird of the day was a single
male Common Goldeneye at Ogdens. The only pelagics spotted were
Northern Gannets which were seen by the tens at all locations. A flock
of 12 Surf Scoter was present at Ballantynes and another 5 at
Cribbons. In additions to the small numbers of juvenile Double-crested
Cormorants at all stops, there were 2 juvenile Great Cormorants at
Ballantynes. Strong winds from the NW made for very windy conditions
on the Northumberland and calm conditions on St. George's Bay side.

Belated report of raptors seen Friday afternoon: Adult male Merlin at
Malignant Cove, juvenile Northern Harrier at Lakevale.
