--Boundary_(ID_BYOu7LxL/YejEu16UZnWPg) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT SEPT. 29, 2009 - Port Williams sewage ponds: 3 female or immature ring-necked ducks on the northern pond. Canard Pond: about 20 green-winged teals seen + a few mallards and black ducks. At least 4 and possibly 7+ WOOD DUCKS pond along Middle Dyke Road n. of Kentville and 0.6 km. s. of Chipman's Corner (0.3 km. s. of Richard Stern's house) -- also a few mallards and 1 or 2 double- crested cormorants and 1 great blue heron. In early evening at my Wolfville feeders, there were 6 N. CARDINALS at once: 2 were possibly adults, male & female, and the juveniles were 2 males at different stages of getting red colouration and 2 females. Another thing about the cardinals is that now I can often HEAR their high metallic call-notes, which until this year I had not heard for decades! This must be due to my old right-ear hearing aid dying on me and the replacement which was an upgrade being just better for me or just having better computer settings (which drives me a bit nuts with the frequent feedback which I hope only I can hear!). SEPT. 30, 2009 - Wolfville Harbour at low tide: at least 10 yellowlegs of undetermined species, prob. most or all greaters, plus 8 semipalmated plovers, plus one "peep" that was probably a sanderling. Also present were 2 mud-sieving black ducks and 20+ rock pigeons. Along the entrance path to the Wolfville Waterfront Park, the planted Canada holly? bushes show lots of lovely bright red berries. On the Upper Canard dykelands there was a hovering red-tailed hawk, opportunistically taking advantage of today's moderate to stiff winds which allow the hawks to stay in one spot with little energetic cost (like perching on the air). Speaking a red-tailed hawks, one of them at Grand Pre has been in the habit of using the power lines as places to perch while hunting the grasses below, along the main north-south road across the dykeland. Another red-tail over the past two winters did the same thing in Greenwich along Highway 1between the Irving station and Noggins Farm. In Kentville I went to 23 Pleasant St., where Dave and Jane ?? live (address supplied by Richard Stern, first names from a neighbour). Hopefully Dave will send me info' via e-mail about dates and numbers of HOUSE FINCHES etc. seen there. However, they have no feeders up yet this Autumn; thus the finches he told me about must have been back in late Winter or Spring, before they left for Smith's Cove. Thus I will report in due course.
