Today John Gilhen from NSM and I went to the Shubenacadie R to look for the
Zebra Clubtail - we bonked on that . We did the Elmsdale to Cooks Brooks
loop and came thru Elderbank to Wyses Corner to Antrim in back of airport
and home. In fact odonates were few and far between but did see Shadow
darner , Varaible darner, Banded Meadowhawk and White faced Meadowhawk.

At Cooks Brook there were literally hundreds of Clouded Sulphurs. There were
yellow form males and females . And I have never seen so many white form
females . They were all trying to pair in flite . Some were even in groups
of 3 "in cop ' in flite.

It was here that we saw the first of our late flying leps of season .

A fresh female Common ringlet ( C. tullia) was on the wing . Can be known
for a second brood on wing from early Aug -early Sept.

Our second discovery was a real find in that of lone Least Skipper
(A.numitor) in a marsh at Wyses Corner . Interestingly these have been
recorded to be on the wing from from late June to late July. In fact July 17
is the last date on record in Fergusons "Macroleps of NS" . This lep
supercedes that date by 2 months. Begs the question of a possible 2nd
generation of this skipper or just an outlier from perhaps Aug hatching ? ?
?
