SEPT. 17, 2009 - ROBIE TUFTS NATURE CENTRE AT DUSK: NO WOLFVILLE
CHIMNEY SWIFTS counted -- observations from 7:25 to 7:55 p.m. (Sunset
about 7:20 p.m. and was quite spectacular at about 7:40 p.m.) -- sky
partly clear but plenty of clouds to make for a beautiful Sunset --
temp. about 13 C.
SEPT. 18, 2009 -- I checked on that spot at Hortonville that the
Thextons had alerted me about, for the cormorants. Today at 2:30
p.m., 1.5 hours after high tide, there were 30 DOUBLE-CRESTED
CORMORANTS, apparently all JUVENILES (this year's young) in their
quite variable plumage from nearly all brown to having light breasts
and necks (see Sibley and Nat. Geogr. guides), perched on the power
lines across the mouth of the Gaspereau River at Hortonville (east of
Grand Pre). At the Hortonville/Grand Pre exit off highway 101, drive
on the road parallel to the highway that goes to the river, north of
the highway -- at the dead end is a great and close view of those
power lines.
