Hello all,

I've been a bit busy with school starting up again but have still managed to get some birding in.

My most exciting sighting was on September 6, when a group of crows yelling their heads off outside my house attracted my attention. I looked out the living room window and saw that a juvenile goshawk had caught a crow on my lawn, and the other crows were not happy. The gos dragged her prey under a spruce, which caused the angry crows to give up (could no longer reach her) and ensured that I could not get a good photo because of all the branches in the way! The gos left about 45 minutes after catching the crow, carrying what was left in one foot and sporting an enormous crop.

A mystery animal has been making odd noises in the night outside my home over the last few weeks. It's a plaintive, repeated sound, almost mewing. The sounds are usually one syllable, but can be quite varied. The sounds will go on for up to twenty minutes. I caught a short video clip in pitch darkness which has some of the calls (you may need to turn up your volume). mystery night animal
The animal can move quite a distance in a short period of time, making me think it can fly. But it doesn't sound like any owl I've ever heard, and I can't think of anything else that would sound like that. Anyone know what this could be?

I'm going on a trip down to Cape Sable Island this weekend - I'm staring to get very excited! Only 1 more day...
