--Boundary_(ID_yOAsfvCUyqYc/BtdHL2ySA) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Brenda & Bill Thexton provided me with the following CRITTER SIGHTINGS for the dates that Pat & I were away from Nova Scotia: The Thextons look for DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS at high tide at Hortonville perched on the transmission wires across the mouth of the Gaspereau River, and they have never seen so many as this year: Sept. 6/09 -- 57 -- Sept. 7/09 -- 67 -- Sept. 8/09 -- 72 -- Sept. 9/09 -- 60 --; Jake MacDonald reports (lower Maple Ave., east Wolfville) that on Sept. 10/09 he saw a pair of adult NORTHERN CARDINALS with 3 still- dependent JUVENILES that were being fed by the parents; he noticed that one of the youngsters was bigger than the other two, and the larger one disappeared after a few days, whereas he is still seeing the family with two juveniles on Sept. 16/09. Jake is sure that this BROOD is at least the THIRD noted at his place this summer; the first two broods had only one youngster in each. A couple of summers ago there were at least three broods in both Wolfville (Jake MacDonald) and in Canning (Merritt & Glenys Gibson); as far as I know, the Gibsons still have regular and nesting cardinals in Canning. Finally Brenda & Dianne Thexton reported a very large HORNET NEST (of BALD-FACED HORNETS) very low down (about 1-1.5 metres) in a very small young tree, along Grandview Drive in Wolfville in Tony Napoli's yard. Tony looked closely at the hornets (getting stung several times) to get the identification. These hornets are very closely related to the dozen or so kinds of yellow-jacket wasps in Nova Scotia. The nest is still there, but Tony says that a few young kids vandalized the nest a couple of days ago by ripping out the bottom of the nest -- at great peril, I'll bet!!??
