Last Monday a small group of us set forth on a day of atlasing on Little Tancook and Tancook Islands, in Mahone Bay. The forecast was for showers but they never materialized although fog persisted until noon. Just as we arrived at Tancook Island, our second stop, the fog began to lift and the balance of the day was mostly sunny, as suddenly were our spirits.

Our rarest bird on Little Tancook Island was a Bay-breasted Warbler. There was a Barn Swallow colony utilizing the older buildings alongside the main pier, a habitat not intentionally created by us humans but readily accepted by the birds. We also spotted a pair of Red Crossbills. Yellow Warblers were everywhere, many carrying food.

Our first stop at Tancook Island was the restaurant where a well deserved respite and fine food awaited. Birding was slow as one would expect midday but intriguing nonetheless, and the scenery was splendid. Both Common and Artic Terns were spotted offshore. We were able to see Sandy Island and East Ironbound Island, our visitations from a couple of weeks ago. This place deserves more investigation, earlier in the season and earlier in the morning.

I've attached a few photos of this trip. If you like fog photos this is your ticket.

Hans
