--Boundary_(ID_ISDjwWUpWJj0QfWGeqYwww) Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT JUNE 3, 2009 - ROBIE TUFTS NATURE CENTRE AT DUSK: 40 TOTAL CHIMNEY SWIFTS -- observations from 8:00 to 9:25 p.m., chimney entries from 8:54 to 9:25 p.m. -- clear sky, calm, warm, gorgeous Sunset -- a single BIG UNIDENTIFIED MOTH flew by us at perhaps 9:00 or so -- observers Jim Wolford, Harold Forsyth, Nancy Nickerson, Gisela Westphalen, and about 10-12 members of Acadia Lifelong Learning (ALL). The MOTH mentioned was probably either a POLYPHEMUS or a CECROPIA, but we saw no colour as it was well past us and flying away quickly before we noticed it. I consider the last week of May and the first 10 days or so of June to be "PRIME TIME" for the migrating chimney swifts -- i.e., now is when we can expect the highest numbers of the migrants, along with a similar time at the end of the swifts' season from late July to about mid-August. However, during these prime times we should expect big fluctuations in numbers from night to night, as some flocks depart for further north (perhaps as far as Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec) and are replaced by arriving groups from the south. Then in mid-summer, which is nesting season for the late-nesting swifts, from mid-June to late July or later, the communally roosting swifts are probably adolescent yearlings from last-year's nestings plus perhaps failed breeders?
