I was once picking blackberries (and Polistes wasps feed on the juices of fruits and berries) and accidentally closed my fingers on a paper wasp. The wasp quickly (and painfully) drew my attention to the fact that it was not pleased by this .... ;-> I've picked berries with greater care subsequently, particularly if I notice there are paper wasps around.
