The trail is littered with windfalls at some locations so I recommend this hike for the hardiest of us only, but as always it's well worth the effort. I did the circuit in a clockwise loop this morning and was greeted with fresh spring Painted Trilliums in singles, often in doubles and even a few groups along the way. The Pink Lady's Slipper Orchids are just beginning to lift their heads to open,...probably next week they will display. The Blackburnian and Bay Breasted Warblers have returned to their nesting territory and I was able to hear a Black-backed Woodpecker complaining from the deep woods. Even the black flies were not too bad. A beautiful morning to be out! At home in Portuguese Cove a pair of female Baltimore Orioles stayed with us for a week and went through several oranges. A female Rose-breasted Grosbeak also came through. Our highlight bird, the Dickissel, only stayed one day.
