My friend Kier recently came down from New Brunswick for a visit and we
decided to try out the Musquodoboit Trailways this morning to look for
warblers. Almost as soon as we started walking on the trail, I heard a
weird, but familiar, bird calling off in the distance. We got closer and
realized it was coming from the speckled alder that line the river just
behind the ball field. The sounds were coming from the thinner parts of the
alder and were getting louder, but we couldn't see any bird. It then stopped
calling and we failed to locate it. So, assuming it had flown away, we
headed back onto the trail, past the bridge where we heard the resident. A
little bit afterwards, Kier and I both heard sounds similar to those of a
Bobolink, Kier saying he thought he heard it singing, but it was too distant
to confirm. We then walked over to the trail (opposite of the barricade for
the second road entrance to the trail, about 0.5k past the bridge.) This
trail always had tonnes of warblers and is where I found a Canada Warbler
last year. This time we had a Wilson's Warbler singing a strange song that
we couldn't identify until we actually saw the bird.

On our way back to the parking lot, we checked out the spot where we had
heard the strange bird, and once again it was calling. This time both of us
noted it sounded an awful lot like a Mimid, but was definitely not a
Catbird. Kier didn't like my idea of a Brown Thrasher (what do I know?),
instead he suggested a Northern Mockingbird. Back home, we listened to
recordings and Kier was definitely right. It sounded exactly like the
recordings on All About Birds. I wonder if it will stick around!

Here are directions the Musquodoboit Trailways:
